The recent spike in Tommy John surgeries to Major League Baseball players should be a wake-up call to parents, coaches and players. To prevent throwing injuries at their source – youth baseball - Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Kevin Wilk are releasing Throw Like a Pro; this application shows players, coaches, and parents how to prevent overuse injury. It places the knowledge and expertise of the two foremost experts on throwing injuries in the dugouts, homes, and practice fields across America

Dr. Andrews has spent the latter part of his career trying to prevent throwing injuries in youth sports. He’s worked extensively with Little League Baseball, created the American Sports Institute, and written a book on the topic.

How the Application Works

There are four main features of Throw Like a Pro; a pitch counter and rest calculator, pre-season preparation guide, pre-game warm up, and a component to help educate player’s elbow and shoulder injuries from overuse.

One of the main causes of Tommy John is throwing too many pitches without adequate rest. The pitch counter helps young players, as well as their parents’ and coaches, track exactly how many pitches are thrown during a game and throughout the season. Based upon the player’s age, Throw Like a Pro creates specific guidelines as to how many pitches are too many. The application also includes a rest calculator that outlines exactly how much rest is needed before pitching again.

The pre-season and pre-game warm-up features of Throw Like a Pro consist of video instruction led by Dr. Wilk. Users watch Dr. Wilk walk through each exercise with a professional athlete, while giving pointers and explaining common mistakes. Dr. Wilk said, “The exercises in Throw Like a Pro are the same one’s I use to rehab professional pitchers after undergoing Tommy John surgery, so there’s a good chance you’ll be training just like your favorite major league players.” In addition, players, coaches, and parents gain access to specific recommendations to help players stay healthy throughout a long season.
